Analysis of Ma Jodes Character in The Grapes Of Wrath :: essays research papers

For this essay on John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, I have chosen to do a character analysis. The character that I chose is Ma Jode. I have chosen Ma Jode, because I think she is one or the most important characters in the book. Ma Jode is the most important character because she is very strong-minded. Ma and the family know that she is the backbone of the family and she is very strong-minded, so if she shows any concern or weakness, the family may fall apart. If there is anything on Ma’s mind she must not show any sign of it around the family. Ma might be just as frightened with doubts and fear as the rest of the family, but she always maintains a strong figure or leader. In order for things to go Ma’s way, she must push for them. There are many situations were Ma has to push and put order back and continue strong leader as she is displayed as. An example of were Ma must stay strong is when the family agrees to let Tom and Casey stay behind, to fix the Wilson’s car, without her approval, and she thinks that that will break up the family. After that incident, she pretty much replaces Pa’s place as the head of the family. Another big situation is when she is threatening a police man with a pan, and she tells the family there leaving the government camp. Pa’s gets pissed because his power became lessened due to Ma’s leadership, Pa says â€Å"Seems like the times are changing.† Ma’s loves her family so much that she often sacrifices he own well being to help out the family in any way that she can possible do it. An example of her doing so, is when Grandma is dying. The family stops at the boarder of California and she fears that if the guard know the grandma is dead, they wont let them in, so she lies to the guard and tell them that grandma is very sick and she needs to see a doctor. Ma sits next to grandma for the rest of the night. That is a big sacrifice for the family, because she had to lay next to a dead person all night just to get her family through to California. During the hole journey for the Jode family Ma is the strongest, and upheld character of the book.

Pragmatism Is the Philosophy of Practicality

INTRODUCTION Philosophy is a hypothetical interpretation of the unknown. It is a point of view that provides a logical, rational, and valid basis for educational effort and criteria for the selection of a sound educational practice. Philosophy of Education Educating children profoundly affects their lives and influences the life of anyone who comes into contact with those children. Education provides a foundation for a child to start his life. Without a true education, it becomes impossible for an individual to provide for themselves and their family. Also, well-educated people can make decisions that benefit both their own interests and the interests of society as a whole. In some cases, philosophies of education do contradict and oppose each other, like for instance, idealism as opposed to the philosophy of naturalism. In fact we cannot question it because they have different points of view as regard to education. STATEMENT OF POSITION Pragmatism is the philosophy of practicality an d usefulness. Pragmatists see the world as a place for experience of all kinds.Pragmatism believes changes in education and opposes traditional education. Gaining of knowledge for the sake of knowledge is not the real aim of education. This philosophy focuses mental, religious and aesthetic forms of human activity. If I were a teacher, I would go with the philosophy of pragmatism. For me pragmatism is shooting two birds in one stone, you are thinking and you are putting it into action. I don’t prefer a class sitting, writing, and reading books only, without applying it.The effectiveness of our ideas, statements and concept must be seen on our actions. In pragmatism, schools and other educational institutions are flexible, they can remain alive, active and satisfy the changing needs of the society and provide real experiences through activities. It is not only a center of education but a center of community because a school that inculcates the philosophy of pragmatism is a tru e representation of a society. Pragmatic teacher are the one who first succeed in the teaching-learning process. The teacher acts as a friend, guide and philosopher to the child to gain close and positive relationship so that it is easier for them to teach and handle problems in the teaching process. As an experience-based philosophy, the curriculum includes useful activities, experiences and subjects that are useful to the present needs of the learner and also for the future expectations of adult life. It also contains skills to develop the learners which develop social and purposeful attitude. They oppose bookish knowledge and condemn those methods which promote knowledge which is not useful. The learners are keen to try things out; they want concepts that can be applied. They tend to become impatient with discussion type. They learn best when techniques are shown and they have the chance to try it out. They are also open to innovation as long as effective in the educational process . CONCLUSION Pragmatism is an attitude and a way of living which opposing the old doctrines of idealism and naturalism and inspire the individual to look ahead and create new values for an unknown future, so that he leads a better, happier and richer life. The importance of studying pragmatism as a philosophy is to understand deeply the educational process. Each fundamental aspect has a basic function in the education process. To me an effective educator is, first and foremost, someone who genuinely cares about the quality of the education a student is receiving. My memories of great teachers always involve teachers who obviously put time and thought into actions with their lessons. They offered their time to students who wanted to improve.I think that as an educator you should put into practice all the thoughts and bright ideas into action necessary to make your lessons thoughtful and hopefully fun Pragmatism serves as our guide in the educational process. Through this, we can also have a brighter understanding on how education would be. It would probably a great help for us to have all this things for the fulfilment of our good towards education. Importance of Technology for an English Class Essay

I am a true believer that technology has become part of our daily life, especially when it comes to teaching a Lingua Franca just like the English Language. It is a tool that we as teachers cannot keep isolated; it is there to contribute in the teaching and learning process. However, when talking about teaching English fully online, it may have its advantages as well as its disadvantages. First, I would like to highlight some of the advantages students and teachers may encounter or face when dealing with this type of device. For example, often students work full or part time jobs while going to college so their time is valuable. So these students make some decisions in choosing classes online because these classes give flexibility, so this is convenient for students when not having enough time . In addition, a student can usually take the course any time during the day or week. They can also take the class based on their schedules. Many students work on their course during the middle of the night or early in the morning. The flexibility of the course makes it possible for a person to complete the course, while attending college courses in person might be impossible due to their work schedules. Another great advantage of English online courses is that almost any type of skills can be found online. Distance learning courses are often available from a number of colleges. A person can simply use the Google to find a class. Furthermore, many students enjoy classes on line because they avoid facing the instructor and feel free to ask questions and get answers back almost immediately Online courses are convenient for most undergraduate and graduate students who can study when they want and they can finish writing or researching assignments based on their own personal schedules. The fact is as I mentioned above online courses offer flexibility and convenience that are often vital to students who work and have families. Second, teachers teaching English online have the great advantage of using helpful tools by just clicking on , tools that may help us to keep students interested, motivated and eager to learn. On line teachers have access to so many things that sometimes are not seen in a regular classroom. In many cases, online avoid monotony and the environment is completely different to what we see every single day. I have heard many experiences from teachers and students about teaching online and some of them are good, just a few exceptions . As I mentioned at the beginning, teaching online also has its negative side, for example the lack of supervision, the cost of online courses, which are often expensive. Another disadvantage of online courses is the complete lack of supervision. If a person is not motivated to finish what they start, then it is probably not a good idea to take an online course. While there may be deadlines and expectations from the online course instructor, there is no one there to remind him/her to do the assignments or to take the tests. Besides, a student or teacher who does not have computer or internet skills cannot expect to do well with an online course. A student or teacher taking or giving an online course must have access to a computer. These are two requirements that need to be considered before taking an online course. A large disadvantage in taking online courses is whether they are accepted by other colleges. It is important to check out whether the course will be accepted by others? Who actually offers the course? Does a college offer this course? Another important disadvantage of taking an online course is found in students who have the tendency to procrastinate. Do they procrastinate when it comes to completing their writing assignments? Do they finish their goals? If the answer is yes, then it is probably not a wise idea for them to take an online course. Teaching English online is a great tool for teachers and students who have good skills at computers and internet. For example in our case if we do not have a good command on this , we cannot waste our students` time trying to understand or learn how to use certain tools. That is why we should be prepared for the new modalities in teaching, we have to get updated in order to go at the same speed of our students`. The teaching online demands from teachers and students to have a good computer equipment, as well as good headphones, microphones, etc. for a good development of the class. Finally, everything is possible in teaching it is just a matter of a good preparation to break down the barriers of this century.

Does Communication Matter in ALL Fields Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Does Communication Matter in ALL Fields - Essay Example Attaining success in the field of business is heavily reliant on the attainment of effective communication. In this field it is necessary for stakeholders to use the right communication tools to communicate the appropriate message and to do so in a timely manner. In fact, in business, communication is a vital key that managers rely on to motivate and their staff and other stakeholders to aspire toward the attainment of organizational goals and success. The importance of communication in business today can also be proven by the fact that most successful corporations have corporate communication departments which deal with improving communication. Studies indicate that people who work in business-oriented fields spend over nearly three quarters of their time at work communicating (Phillips & Friedman, 2008).It is findings such as these that have driven employers in the business field to put more emphasis on the need to employ people who can communicate effectively. In fact, lack of eff ective language skills, low self-assurance in communication and improper body language have been cited as some of the most common reasons why employers disqualify potential employees in business-related fields. This is perhaps due to the fact that employers look for a recruit who can communicate effectively on a global scale because of increased globalization (Phillips & Friedman, 2008). In science- related fields, communication is also just as important. There is a prevalent perception in society today that people in science-related fields are mostly aloof and have very minimal communication skills. While this perception is not entirely accurate, it is a fact that it is often easier for scientists to communicate with their colleagues than it is for them to do so with those not in the realm of science. However, effective communication matters in the field of science because; ultimately, scientists need to express their ideas to non-scientists in

Differentiated Instruction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Differentiated Instruction - Essay Example This ensures that all students who are placed in an education system can be provided with training materials in ways that are considerate of the different situations of the environment. Through this way, there is no single student who can fail to acquire ideas because of the limitations posed by their environment, gender, ability or disability, language spoken, personal interests as well as the socioeconomic issues surrounding the area. In education, there are different methods of teaching that are implemented and which can be implemented to ensure that all the people who seek education get the ideal kind without restriction (Etscheidt, 2006). This kind of education, which factors in the requirements of all students in terms of their ability and improvising the environment to make it bearable for learner, is known as differentiated instruction and it takes place in different forms. Differentiated instruction does not characterize the area of acquisition of knowledge only but also the environment of acquisition, modes of assessment of ideas, the amount of support that is given to different students as well as manipulating the contents in the study. Differentiated education is a method of instruction whose main purpose is to ensure easy accommodation different students in program, which has students who have different styles of learning and varying instruction preferences. This kind of instruction involves teaching one subject to different students in varying ways to make sure that the differences are represented by the people. In order to understand differentiated instruction, a person can consider the elaborating the different methods of differentiation which lead to improvement of the situation of individual learner when they are exposed to classes. There are four main ways through which teachers accommodate students with different education needs to ensure that they do not only get the ideas but also are able to apply them in their day to day life after they are subjected them. The four areas that are addressed by the differentiated instruction include the factors of environment of learning, the mode of assessment, the support accorded to learners as well as the modification of the content of learning (Landrum & McDuffie, 2010). In passing of ideas, there are students that are generally slow to learn while others are quick to grasp and use ideas, which are passed by a teacher to them. Those with slow learning abilities require more support from their teachers than those that are quick learners and can get ideas by their own. There are students who can get ideas by their exposure to books on their own without necessarily getting the teachers to help them in elaborating the content of the book. These students can be taught in very easy ways because the amount of time the teacher accords them is minimal so that they do not have to spend a lot of time and energy to teach. These students are able to get and apply ideas that are contained in different books without necessarily getting much assistance from their teachers. This means that exposure to book books can be the only tasking support that a teacher can engage in to facilitate the learning of such a student. On the other hand, there are those students
