Hopkins Winhover Analysis

Who is God? Gerard Hopkins spent his life finding the answer through his poetry and exploring the nature around him. In Gerard Hopkins' poem â€Å"The Windhover† there is a representational allusion to Christ and Jesus. The speaker praises the Lord by praising what he takes as a symbol for Christ. Throughout the poem the speaker symbolizes Christ's glory by the way the falcon reacts to the air, how it maneuvers and even characteristic traits of the falcon species. The poem uses alliteration, internal rhyming, compound metaphors, elliptical grammar and complex threads of connotation. One could only appreciate the glory of the Lord more after interpreting the poem. The poem is almost impossible to understand without good background knowledge about Hopkins’s ideas and his odd words. There are many words of the Anglo-Saxon origin like rung (past tense of ‘ring’), minion, dauphin, and chevalier. There are also unusual combinations like â€Å"dapple-dawn-drawn†, which is an image of the bird. The last stanza is particularly complex because of the associatively linked words related to Christ and his sacrifice. Finally, the grammar is also odd; actually the poem does not follow any traditional grammar and structure. In short, the poem can be discussed as a sonnet because it has some of the features of the typical sonnet, but it must be called a modified sonnet adapted to a different kind of subject, word-game and music. The poem is therefore the thanksgiving to Christ. It is a hymn that is romantic in form but religious in theme. When the poet sees the beautiful bird, he is reminded of Christ and becomes thankful and appreciative of him. The poem’s theme is therefore related to the poet’s praise of Christ rather than being about the bird. Hopkins has mixed his romantic fascination with the nature and his religious favor of gratitude towards God for giving us a beautiful nature. The beauty of nature is illustrated by his attention that is suddenly drawn by the scene of a bird flying in the sky. He describes a bird which he saw flying in the sky that morning. Like in a romantic poem, he remembers the experience to express his feelings. That morning, the speaker had been out at dawn. From the excited description in the poem, we can infer that the speaker was probably in the field. This admirer of Christ brings the image of Christ’s wounds, pain and sacrifice. This suggests that he always remembers and becomes thankful to Christ. The poem is subtitled â€Å"To Christ our Lord† because the falcon reminds him of Christ. The speaker continuously hails one of God's most stunning creatures, the falcon. He is flabbergasted at the magnificence of the windhover's flight. He wonders at its colorful feathers and the sheer speed of its flight. His tone suggests that he is in awe. He is observing something equivalent to the second coming of Jesus or angels walking among regular men. He throws out a barrage of visual imagery to describe the windhover and still does not seem to come close to its real magnificence. He wonders how such a creature could exist but is eventually just filled with glee in knowing the fact that it does exist. In the first stanza the speaker states that he spotted the morning's minion as if to suggest that the falcon was somehow less important to the morning. He suggests that there is some sort of royal hierarchy by using words that recall images of sovereignty. He describes the different tricks of the bird’s flight. The second stanza takes a different stance on things. The windhover is out maneuvering when it smoothly and suddenly dives. The speaker is scared for the birds' safety but is pleasantly surprised when the bird is lifted by a huge wind. One can say that in times of foolish pleasure he can fall but Christ will always be there to lift him back up. Christ is the cushion needed for even a temporary fall from grace. Stanza three uses a stream of descriptive words to denote the dignity of such a creature. In the animal kingdom it would be considered king of the roost. The speaker calls the windhover a chevalier meaning knight or in other words a savior. Christ is also considered a savior. The speaker compares the bird and Christ with the hard work of the plow that creates a channel and displays the wet soil underneath and burned embers that shine red-gold when split open and burn with fire. That is directly omparable to the assumption that the speaker was living a dark life until the Lord stirred up his liveliness, split open his dark shell and helped him to shine with a new vigor for life. Christ could be seen in nature in the windhover's existence. He is symbolized in all the actions of the falcon and also represented in its characteristics. America’s Foundation

The United States Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson was a statement that was used on July 4, 1776 by the Continental Congress to declare the independence of thirteen American colonies from Britain. It entailed in part the following; political independence of every person as provided by natural law, right of revolution. By this, it implied that all Americans were entitled to equal rights and in cases where these rights were breached, anyone was entitled to revolt against the aggressor.Another part of the declaration was a list of charges against king George who was seen as having dishonored the rights of colonialist therefore was seen as unfit to govern. Lastly, the declaration stipulated conditions under which people could change their government and Britain situation offered a perfect example. Hence it called on to all colonies to throw off British Crown and claim their independence (Library of Congress, 1861, 865). The article of Confederation The article of C onfederation was the first governing constitution of America.The article sought to unite several States in America that were initially sovereign under the British regime. It was made in drafts with the last draft made in 1977 and adopted by Continental Congress on November 15, 1977. The article stipulated the rules and regulation to govern the new found United States confederation. Hence with the Article, United States was capable of making wars and settling interstates dispute diplomatically. Furthermore, United States was able to resolve issues concerning western territories.The articles were created with a view of providing freedom, Sovereignty and independence of America. With time, it was found that these articles were unable to provide sufficient provisions that would govern the country effectively hence a need for a detailed constitution that would replace the Confederation with the Federal. This paved way for the formation of a constitution in 1788 (Jensen, 1970, p 109). The constitution The constitution is the current governing body of law in United States of America.It is the supreme law of United States and is the source of legal authority fundamental to the existence of America and all its administrative and judicial bodies within it. It defines three arms of the government; the legislative led by Congress, an executive branch led by the President and judicial branch led by Supreme Court. In its description, it stipulates each branch powers that helps eliminate conflict of power during implementation. In addition, it established the federal system of government that gave individual states various rights.It was adopted on September 17, 1789 and has so far undergone twenty seven amendments (Hickey, 1853, 483) Comparison and Contrast between Articles of Confederation, Constitution and Declaration of Independence. There are various similarities and differences in the Declaration, Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. In comparison, all the ab ove three documents sought to provide the sovereignty and independence of United States of America. They stipulated that US was a sovereign state that was capable of making laws, negotiating diplomatic relations and setting up its own army.America, therefore, was free to trade and govern itself under its own laws without any external interference. All three document emphasized on basic human right. This was stipulated through the provision for freedom of movement and expression in the constitution and the Article of Confederation. Equality and sovereignty of each state was also equally stipulated in three documents. Above all, the document stipulated the rules and regulation that would hence fourth govern United States of America.Breach of which would lead to prosecution and there after a punishment. Similarity among the documents can also be seen in their way of formation where by; representatives from various states were chosen to draft them and later sign on the document to authe nticate them. In this sense, all the above three document are similar. Contrasts Among the notable differences are in levying taxes. In Articles of Confederation, Congress could only request various states to pay taxes but looking into the constitution, Congress has the right to levy taxes on individuals.On the Executive side, the Constitution provides the president with powers to choose cabinet members and has power to check on the powers of judiciary and legislature, however, the article provided the president with no executive powers and his role was only to preside over the Congress. On amending the constitution, two thirds of both houses of congress and three quarter of senate legislature are needed to amend the constitution under the provision of the current constitution compared to thirteen out of thirteen as provided by the Article.With the Article, it recommended that sovereignty remained within States however; the constitution states that it is the supreme law of the land hence sovereignty applies within the range of constitution. Regarding trade, Article provided no control of trade within states and no regulation what so ever was done between interstate trades. This implied that there was free movement of goods and services within states without government interference. However, constitution provides for regulation of trades between states and the power is bestowed to the Congress which oversees all these regulations.In formation of an army to provide military support, Article of Confederation awarded no right to the congress to draft troops that would participate in war. Hence, they had to rely on military contribution by various states. In the Constitution, Congress has the power to raise an army that would deal with any military emergency in the country. English as Essay – Homosexuality in Vernon God Little

Explore Pierre’s presentation of ideas concerning homosexuality and teenagers in Vernon God Little. In the novel, ‘Vernon God Little’ by DCB Pierre we see the presentation of teenage life and also homosexuality through the characters of Vernon Little and Jesus Navarro. As the book was published eight years prior to us reading it, the views Pierre presents could be different to our own. Also, Pierre’s age and up bringing add to the way he portrays different aspects of life. I believe that in ‘Vernon God Little’ Pierre presents teenagers as rude, bad mannered and impatient and homosexuals in a negative light.We are introduced to Vernon’s character whilst he is in prison. Pierre’s lexis tells us straight away that Vernon is a teenager as ‘Don’t even try to guess who stood all Tuesday night in the road. Clue: snotty ole Mrs. Lechuga’ page 1. The colloquial language creates a sense of childishness, which is enhanced by the insults describing Mrs. Lechuga. The word ‘ole’ suggests that Vernon believes everyone to be old in contrast to him. This is shown throughout the novel as Pierre repeats the insult.Also, Pierre’s use of the colon represents how Vernon did not wait for an answer, but instead carries on his trail of thought, pointing towards an impatient nature which is associated with teenagers. This technique is shown again on the same page when Vernon is thinking back to ‘that ole black guy who was in the news last winter’ page 1. This story is also used to show Vernon’s discomfort in his current situation. Pierre cleverly uses the story so Vernon can avoid talking about his own situation, as if ignoring it will make it disappear.This can be linked with Jesus’ philosophical question to Vernon at the end of chapter two ‘that if things don’t happen unless you see them happening. ’ page 18. This signifies teenage attitude as th ey are both trying to shift the guilt and the blame- Jesus with the massacre he commits and Vernon with the fact he is wrongly in prison. Another essential moment to show teenage attitude is when Vernon is contemplating whether or not to phone Taylor. To decide a conclusion he flips a coin ‘it comes down heads which means I call her in Houston immediately. page 154. Pierre uses this technique to show the reader how Vernon is trying to shift any pressure he can as he is finding it hard to deal with being on the run and the death of his school mates. Furthermore, at the end of chapter one, suspicions begin to arise about Vernon’s sexuality ‘Regular boy then, are you son? Like your cars, and your guns? And your-girls? ’ page 10. Pierre’s choice of the word ‘regular’ shows the reader that the Martirio society is not accepting of homosexuals.This is supported by the homophobic attacks that people have had to suffer for years. In the past thre e years, one in five gay people have been subjected to homophobic hate crime (found http://www. guardian. co. uk/society/2008/jun/26/equality. gayrights) . Pierre also uses rhetorical questions here and does not give Vernon time to answer any questions except the one about girls. This suggests the idea that the interviewer was only interested in Vernon’s sexuality. This accusation adds strain to Vernon’s character as he is trying to be a ‘regular’ teenager.Vernon also keeps changing his middle name throughout the novel; this shows that he is having trouble accepting himself and also the situation that he is in. The way the name constantly changes is a metaphor for how society and Vernon’s situation keeps changing. For example, on page 2 Pierre calls him ‘Vernon Genius Little’. In context we see that Vernon mocks himself here which enhances the struggle for identity and how he is being punished for being different. Subsequently, we are a ble to see that Pierre uses his characters to question homosexuality, but he never has them ask about sexuality straight out.Instead they avoid the subject which is a reflection of society’s reaction towards homosexuality in 2003 – when the novel was published. A good example of this is when Vernon is being interviewed on page 10 ‘Examine Little’s clothes did you? ’ ‘Undergarments? ’ Pierre is also able to portray the communities view on homosexuality through the character of Barry Gurie. At the end of chapter six, Gurie is questioning Vernon and starts teasing him about Jesus and his pending sexuality – ‘You aint tossin the ham javelin all night long, thinkin of your meskin boy? Grr-hrr-hrr’ Page 60.Pierre’s use of vulgar imagery illustrates how the community feels towards homosexuality. The potential rejection adds to Vernon’s struggle for identity. The laughter at the end of the line indicates the pe ople in the community do not take homosexuality or teenagers seriously and think of them as things to laugh at. In the second chapter, Pierre introduces Jesus Navarro during a flashback of Vernon’s. The first accusation of his sexuality is how ‘they found him wearing silk panties’ page 16. This is very effeminate and leads reader to question his sexuality.Pierre also tells us how Jesus’ father instantly denies that his son wore the lingerie by choice- ‘his ole man says the cops planted them on him’ Page 16. The way Pierre mentions Mr. Navarro’s outrage at the underwear but not the loss of his son or the massacre could also symbolise how the community finds fault in Jesus as a person without paying respect to his life. It is symbolic of how people instantly find fault in others. Chapter two also subtly points out how Jesus was being sexually abused by Marion Nuckles and Dr. Goosens- ‘Nuckles recommended his to a shrink. Jesus got w orse after that. Page 17. Pierre’s use of a short sentence creates a sense of worry. It allows the reader to understand that Vernon was worried about Jesus without having to vocalise it. This relates back to Vernon’s pride and how teens are perceived as not caring and shouldn’t talk about their feelings. The allegations of Jesus’ abuse are confirmed at the end of the novel in the form of his suicide note-‘you sed it was love you batsards’ Page 275. The wrong spellings suggest that Jesus was uneducated which is a stereotype of those from other cultures forced to learn our own culture.Also the use of the word ‘bastards’ means a child born out of wedlock and Pierre used it here as it symbolises the bad relationships shared between Jesus and the elder men. The note is important to the plot as it seals that fate of Nuckles and Goosens. It shows that the police are able to prosecute Nuckles and Goosens. In conclusion, I feel that Pierr e perceives homosexuality in a bad light. This is because the three characters that were openly homosexual – Jesus, Nuckles and Goosens – do not get the stereotypical ‘happy ever after’ like the other characters.This could show that society’s prejudice views can manipulate people’s minds and force them to go to extreme lengths. He also presents teenagers in both good and bad ways which indicates that not every teenager is the same and Pierre could not pin point a single action which defined every single person. this is because teenagers are misunderstood by other people and Pierre wanted to reflect that in his writing. Emergency Response in Franklin County Essay The role of major health personnel in an emergency is to manage the safety and well being of the people in their community during and after a natural or man-made disaster. This is done by assessing the details of what occurred, what needs must be met and facilitating a team to organize information about the event and provide logistics as quickly as possible. This is seen in the simulation exercise for the â€Å"Disaster in Franklin County†. (Olson, Larsen, Scheller, Johnson, 2006) Roles are appointed in a chain of command format. It is ideal that all personnel have received some type of emergency management training, but even if not, skill sets must be assessed and duties assigned accordingly. An Incident Commander will be appointed and the Public Health Director assigns rolls that include finances, planning, logistics, public information liaison and operators. The Public Health Team will work closely and concurrently with other entities, such as the Fire Chief, Police Chief, Hazardous Materials Team, Public Works and EMS teams. The public health department is mostly concerned with the safety and logistics of sheltering victims and being sure that food and water provided is safe for consumption. The community health nurse is primarily concerned about the immediate welfare and safety of the public, including issues of safety in homes, sanitary food options and safe water availability. It is important to have press releases ready to go that are clear and informative, yet simple. Any public statement made by the nurse should be thoughtful and considerate, assuring the community that they are in good hands and that things are being taken care of by appropriate people and in a timely manner. Public Service Announcements (PSAs) are an opportunity to gain trust and respect and show competence and compassion. In the Franklin County scenario, the public health nurse is assigned to do door-to-door interviews in an area of town hit the hardest by flood damage. The nurse is assessing for personal safety, being certain that there are no medically fragile patients, home bound persons or persons with special needs. Without electricity, a patient that requires at home oxygen, nebulizers, chemo or dialysis will need to be assisted to a shelter. Families with infants must be comfortable with an abundance of supplies. Contamination risks from food spoilage must be made aware, and the nurse must assess if he or she believes that the family has the means to safely prepare meals and have access to clean water. Finally, the nurse assesses for structural safety and advises community members on whether or not they should consider relocating to a shelter. With the uncertainty of going door-to-door, a nurse must be prepared to assess needs that are out of their scope of practice. They must be prepared to offer resources that may be out of their area of expertise. Situations that occur may range greatly, such as difficulty with foreign language communication, to chemical spills in yards or improper use of a generator. In cases such as this, the actions of the community health nurse must be resourceful and know that he or she can call on other professionals to reach out where they needed. A family with chemical leakage from flooding may be guided to a shelter for their immediate safety and the community health nurse may follow up by asking an Environmental Director to assess the property, instead of offering wrong or false advice to the homeowner. Natural and man-made disasters not only put community members at a physical risk, but also at emotional risk, as situation arise as homes are destroyed, insurance issues arise, or being separated from loved ones. The public health nurse also needs to take action and be resourceful in providing appropriate referrals for mental health, including providing phone numbers, access to call or reach out, and to follow up and be sure that there is enough man-power to assist with answering phones or counseling people. Techniques that were used were active listening and repeating statements back, validating that their thoughts and fears are heard. Assurance was given that the situation was grave, but not hopeless. Encouragement was provided to make appropriate, yet difficult, decisions such as leaving one’s house and personal belongings in a time of crisis. In widespread disaster scenarios, that affect greater areas, such as Hurricane Katrina, not only are public nurses needed, but it is important that nursing personnel from hospitals and state health departments are involved. In times of crisis, all professionals need to be on the same page to avoid offering mixed messages or advise to the public. Basic training in emergency management should be provided for all health care professionals. Emergency communication must also be set in place, as with no electricity or land lines, there must be agreed upon and practiced means of communication between all emergency responders. In area with high incidences of particular storms, flooding or power outages, PSA’s can be prepared ahead of time and are ready to go during times of crisis with minor modifications. The community health nurse is an import piece of the emergency management team, and is a direct liaison between the public and the resources.

White Collar Crime: The Influences of the Social Class Introduction When it comes to talk about crime, a lot of people will relate to the street crimes including burglary, robbery, and assault. However, more and more people complain that an increasing number of white-collar crimes exits in our society nowadays, such as false advertising, tax evasion, and insider stock trading. Write-collar crimes are very complicated issues which can harm victims both directly and indirectly without the victims even knowing it (Benson 3). It affects individuals, all levels of government, and all sectors of society, and brings about a considerate impact on the problems and concerns, and fears of the country. According to the sociological textbook Sociology: The Points of the Compass, this paper will use the sociology viewpoint which is from Chapter 5 to analyze how the white-collar crimes influence of the social class. The first section of the paper provides an overview on the concept of white-collar crimes. In the second section we will look at the severity of the white-collar crimes. Finally, we will analyze the social characteristics of white-collar offenders. The definition of white-collar crime The term of white-collar crime is original introduced by Professor Edwin H. Sutherland of Indiana University in 1939, which is crimes committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation. (Rosoff 2) Sutherland also defines two important facts of the white-collar crime. First, he points out that the white-collar offenders are in the upper social status and more powerful (Rosoff 2). Second, he refers the fact that the justice system is inclined to employ a very different procedural apparatus for dealing with white-collar offenders (Rosoff 3). Persons who violate laws regarding restraint of trade, advertising, pure food and drugs, and similar practices are not arrested by uniformed policemen, are not tried in criminal courts, and are not committed to prisons; this illegal behavior receives the attention of administrative commissions and of courts operating under civil or equity jurisdiction. (Rosoff 3) White-collar crime is also called commercial crimes committed by people exclusively for personal gain (Hackler 231). Herbert Edelhertz is official at the U.S. Department of Justice in 1970, who points out an offense-based of white-collar crime theory (Benson 7). He defines white-collar crime is an illegal act or series of illegal acts committed by non-physical means and by concealment or guile to obtain money or property, to avoid the payment or loss of money or property, or to obtain business or personal advantage (Benson 7). However, more and more criminologists argue with the Edelhertzs offense-based approach, in which an increasing number of white-collar crimes also physically harms and violences on their victims, like both the manufacture of dangerous products and the maintenance of unsafe working environments are important types of white-collar-crime (Benson 13). The Severity of the White-Collar Crime Actually, the white-collar crimes have caused much more serious results and damaged more of our society than any other kind of crimes. Even in societies that celebrate the importance of the individual, the power of authority can be surprisingly strong (Wicks 42). The white-collar criminals have more authorization to access cooperations asserts or governments confidential documentation; They build their plan precisely and accurately; They can operate their crime process for a long time because of very hard to be discovered. Therefore, a huge loss and harm have been made, when the police stop their crime eventually in most cases of white-collar crime. Louis R. Second, corporations can afford legal experts, public relations firms, and advertising agencies that advise their clients on how to bend laws, build up their corporate image in the public mind, and influence lawmakers to pass laws without teeth. Moreover, even when prosecutions are successful, the punishment is usually light. (Brym 138) Furthermore, there are many indirect aspects resulted by white-collar crime in our society which widely cause more damages than the direct impacts. Many white-collar criminals work in backbone enterprises of a country and hold an important position in it, the criminal activities they acted not only hurt their employers, but also created a lot of harm for millions customers using their services. In some cases, it will affect the reputation of the country or cause the international conflict because of their actions. The victims families also are hurt made by those white-collar criminals. Sometimes, this harm is even more virtual than the direct victims themselves, for example, victims children grow up in the shadow of the harm against their family by criminals, they will have more resentment and negative emotions to the society when they gown up. They maybe because next criminal when those resentment explored one day. The public will loss the confidence to the government if the white-collar crime keeps increasing. People always believe it the governments responsibility to maintain the low crime rate in the society especially the white-collar crime which crime is made by the best class of citizens in the society. The Social Characteristics of White-Collar Offenders Social status is a relative term in the sense that people can be ranked as having more or less of it, depending on their income, education, and occupation. (Benson 164). Sutherland focus on persons of the upper socioeconomic classes, and respectability and social status (Benson 163). Most of the white-collar offenders are in the high social status, which have high level education, high occupation, and high income. In the Yale study, they summarize the main conclusions about the white-collar offenders. First, the typical white-collar offender is a middle-aged white male: 85.5% are more likely to be white, the average age of 40, and 85.5% are male (Benson 31). Second, on average white-collar offenders are better educated and more likely to be employed than common criminals: 79.3% are high school graduates, 27.1% are college graduates and 58.4$ are steadily employed (Benson 31). White-collar crime is committed disproportionately by people from middle and upper classes (Brym 138). The social class conflicts also reflect to the white-collar crimes: the abuse of power. The Marxians conflict theory tends to construe every social conflict and every measure of social power as an expression, device, or function of economic struggle (Silverman 173). It indicates white-collar offenders abuse their power and uses their social status advantages to harm victims. Actually they do more harm, cost more money, and ruins more lives than assaults, thefts, and rape (Hackler 231). The upper class offenders exists widespread of institutions, including business, government, the medical profession, even religious organizations; and they role the remarkably diverse set of actors, like captains of industry, politicians, doctors, cops, and computer hackers (Rosoff 19). Conclusion In Chapter 5 of the Sociology: The Points of the Compass summaries that knowledge and high position in society cant guarantee person keep away from white-collar crimes. The more capability the person has the more damage he/she made when this capability is used in commercial criminality. So, it is very important for teaching the public not only just the skills and knowledge which will find a job in future, but also teaching them what is the correct morality and values in society.

In 1854, Henry David Thoreau gave us what would become his most famous non-fiction book, Walden; or life in the Woods. In this, Thoreau describes his project at Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau decided that he was going to live â€Å"deliberately† in the woods for over two years and live off of a limited economy and isolate himself from society in order to gain a more objective understanding of it. But one has to ask the question, what does Thoreau mean that he wants to â€Å"live ‘deliberately’†? Thoreau himself said that he wanted to â€Å"live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.†(Thoreau, 61) He wanted to live deliberately because he believed that the way we live in society is not really living, it is superficial. It is superficial because of our dependence on material things that in Thoreau’ s mind don’t really matter and can be sacrificed without risking what Thoreau would call actual living. Thoreau believes our dependence on material items is so great that we do not see the majesty of what this world has to offer, we cannot experience the grandeur of nature. So the living â€Å"deliberately† would mean to live with the basic essentials, building a little shelter to shield from harsh elements, living off the food we can grow or gather, and to cut ourselves off from immense contact with society in order to figure out our real purpose in the world. I would argue that Thoreau not only truly lived deliberately and became better versed in the ways of society, but also more versed in alternative ways of viewing something that is common in life, the human brain for example. Living deliberately is show... ... side was spiritual, not unlike the spiritual retreats or pilgrimage of religions. The third side is more neurological, reaching into his own mind and into those of his readers. After spending time in the woods, it would appear that Thoreau reached more insight into his own mind and its inner workings, developing something most people don’t have. I believe it would be safe to assume that almost no one would take the sight of a thawing bank and compare it to the neurological workings of the brain. What do Thomas Hardy's short stories reveal about his society? Thomas Hardy was born 1840 and died 1924. He composed most of his writings between 1871 and 1912. From 1912 till death he wrote poetry. Hardy enjoyed writing short stories because he had realised that with the pressures and busy lifestyles of modern day life there was little time to sit down and read a novel. One difficulty of a short story is that it can't give in depth character analyses but they can gradually allow someone to make their own analyses judging by Hardy's content in his stories. They are succinct which made them successful. What is a short story? For Hardy a short story wasn't a tale that explained the details in two sentences and left the reader blank looking for clues as to where the story was going, the background of the story and who everyone was. Hardy's short stories gave as much detail as possible and if something was missing, it appeared later on, he consistently made sure the reader would keep up with the story and never rushed his stories, making sure the reader got the full jist of the story. A very simple example of this is in "The Superstitious Mans Story" where during the story Hardy includes a short paragraph which is told by the narrator of the story, it provides both the listener in and out of the story with a piece of missing information which we need to understand it fully, because in "The Superstitious Mans Story" there are two listeners, ourselves and Hardy's metaphorical Alias Mr. Lackland. Hardy's stories have a personal feel to them, when you read them he is talking to you, explaining and saying everything to you. For example "The Superstitious Mans Story" and "Old Andrey's Experience as a Musician" Hardy uses a conversational tone, he writes his stories in the way they would be told person-to-person, face-to-face as maybe travellers stories. Society has changed greatly since the time of Thomas Hardy, we no longer have the closeness and reliability that everyone had then. Hardy lived in a community and describes a community in his short stories where every member of the community knows everyone else, knows past and present members and they are able to tell stories about each of them. In this community everyone can rely on someone else, be it a friend or neighbour. A community like this is not found in cities as Hardy discovers when he moves to London in his early years, London was one of the first megalopolises. DEMAND The definition of the demand is the amount of goods that consumers are willing and able to buy at a particular price. According to law of demand, there is an inverse relationship between price of goods and quantity demanded of goods and services. In a better way of explanation, when price of goods and services increase, the quantity demanded for foods and services will be decrease, vice versa. There are some reasons that show that why there is an inverse or negative relationship between price and quantity demanded. Firstly, since everyone likes to save money and buy cheap goods, so, consumers will only buy more goods and services at lower prices than higher prices, vice versa. Next, another reasons for negative relationship is diminishing marginal utility, which means, in a given time period, a buyer will feel less satisfaction from each successive unit consumed so consumers will only buy added units if the price was reduced. Lastly, there are the substitution and income effects of a price change. For the substitution effect, it states that an increase in the price of goods will encourage customers to buy alternatives goods, for example, when the price of meat increases, the quantity demanded for meat will be decrease as ... ... the indirect business tax increase, people will invest less and lead the aggregate demand to be decrease, ideally to a long-run, full –employment level of RGDP. Impact on Learning of Lateralization of Brain Essay

Brain asymmetry refers to the unequal involvement of both hemispheres of the brain in different mental functions. In their general anatomy, the two hemispheres are very similar but there are a number of finer features that distinguish them from each other (Annett, 1985 ). The link between these structural differences and functional differences remains poorly understood. The asymmetry of brain function has been demonstrated both by studying the effects of brain damage on accidental faculties cognitive, but also more recently through the techniques of brain imaging showing asymmetric activations following mental operations, performed which is recorded as evidence of brain activity (Vallortigara & Bisazza, 1999). Despite significant progress on this issue, there are still many points of discussion. The link between these asymmetries and hemispheric dominance is still under scientific investigation, and the mechanisms neuro-developmental factors that lead to these asymmetries are under s tudy. This paper evaluates the impact of brain lateralization on human learning. There are significant ways in which the left hand side of the brain is different from the right hand side. The left temporal cortex neurons have developed the capacity to discriminate and identify sounds and syllables of words emitted by the human voice (Beaton, 2004). While the right temporal cortex neurons are sensitive to musical characteristics of the voice. The hemispheres, right and left, have differentiated to process information in its entirety. Other integrative functions are assigned to each different hemisphere. The left hemisphere is more involved in understanding spoken language but also in logical reasoning and in the motor control of the right side of the body (Capacchione, 2001). While the right hemisphere is more involved in music perception, emotional perception, and visual-spatial control, creativity lies in the motor control of the left side of the body. However, the development of these functions is dependent on many trainings and activities of each person (Morris, Left Brain, Right Brain, Whole Brain?, 2005). Although dedicated to certain functions by programming dependent on genetic information, the brain areas may change depending on their capacity and plasticity of living. The brain is an organ unique to each of us. Left Brain −It is said to be analytic, logical, mathematical, sequential −It works preferably from the detail −It is the seat of language preferred, but not exclusively The study of aphasia (language impairment associated with localized brain damage) showed that a lesion localized does not always match the same pathologies. Thus, about a quarter of a configuration have left hemispheric opposed to the language. Note too that lateralization is not yet established in children, the brain is still malleable until about age 9 to 11 years, some say until adolescence, which would be consistent with the process of myelination (Pinel & Dehaene, 2010). Other exceptions may also be mentioned: the illiterate (in fact, learning to write left to reinforce the dominance for language), the bilingual and multilingual (right cerebral hemisphere of right-handers can play a role in acquiring a second language, especially when learning takes place in adulthood). Finally, there is variability in symptomatology depending on the structure of language speaker’s brains (all languages are not treated the same way) (Capacchione, 2001). This is the basis of science, which allows identifying that 1 +1 = 2. In theory, it cannot be faulted, and can reach all levels of complexity by adding. It is tempting to liken it to mathematics, but it is also the basis of language. Its biggest flaw is that it does not support gaps in processing. The impact of brain lateralization on human learning is, thus, highly significant. Neurological and psychomotor development is a biological process to monitor a child. At the heart of this development, brain lateralization is a concern for most parents. When the child tends to acquire a right-sided dominance, parents are relieved (Coon & Mitterer, Psychology: A Journey, 2010). Otherwise, they are more or less worried about the normal development of their child and its adaptability in a world organized for the convenience of the right-handed individuals. The lateralization process is effective at the age of six or seven years. However, you can tell if your child will be left handed or right from as early as 3 years. Before three years, it is almost impossible to tell if ones child is left or right handed, as the child uses both his hands to seize or to imitate the gestures and movements of adults. However, its laterality begins to define itself through three years. Seeing you eat, it will spontaneously take a spoon and try to imitate the parents guiding hand (Coon & Mitterer, Introduction to Psychology: Gateways to Mind and Behavior, 2010). When I saw you kick a ball, try to copy it using his head. If your child performs these simple gestures with both hands and both feet, it is likely to become ambidextrous. The parental concern for children is mostly left structuring of a society organized for right-handed majority. Low life expectancy, vulnerability to accidents and household accidents, popular prejudices around the left handed mainly because they are forced to adapt to a world of right-handedness. The effort that they are required to live in the societal structure is larger than right-handers. Despite this, the latest statistics continue to show that even in the third millennium; â€Å"lefties† are not an endangered species. The right hemisphere is dominant in people with left-sided brains. In other words, motor development and neurological development is from this hemisphere of the brain. Wanting to force a child to become left-handed is a mistake (Neveu, 2008). This may alter the process of natural development of his/her brain. Stop worrying and help them to develop in the direction of its natural handedness. Make sure your child is accomplished with relative ease useful activities such as writing or using a spoon. If your child is still confined in an ambidextrous trend for five years, it is necessary to consult a psychotherapist. The best-known example of the functional asymmetry is the dominance of the left hemisphere in speech production, which can be around 95% of right-handers and 70% shown by the left-handed. Studies of split-brain patients have shown that only in no stimulation of the right hemisphere processed verbal-expressive utterances were allowed (Osman, Mà ¼ller, & Syre, 2005). Moreover, there is the left hemisphere in word recognition and math operations are dominant. A dominance of the right hemisphere can be detected in areas such as spatial perception and face recognition. Prerequisite for the processing of information is the information recording. All our sense organs can be used as a receiving member. The incoming information is analyzed by comparison with existing knowledge. The perception process could also be called â€Å"hypothesis testing†. Not only prior experience influences human attention, but also the state of the brain. It is now known that learning in the state of a medium level of activation (slight shift towards the negative pole) is more efficient. A large influence on the perception and attention has emotions that are located as mentioned in the limbic system (Roth, 2005). For ongoing learning information recording is required. Thus, learning can be described as a permanent testing of hypotheses. This existing knowledge with newly incoming information is confirmed (assimilation), but above all to improve, expand and change (accommodation). This paper has evaluated the impact of brain lateralization on human learning. The link between these asymmetries and hemispheric dominance is found to be quite strong. Difference between the left-hand and the right-hand side of the brain is found to have impact on mathematical abilities, spatial judgment, logical evaluation and aesthetical development. Scientific evidence on the functioning of left and right hemisphere of the human brain has confirmed the hypothesis that learning differences are found between the two sides of the brain. The right hemisphere is dominant in people with left-handedness, which confirms motor development and neurological thinking is from this hemisphere of the brain. It is also concluded that learning differences are permanent as well, since a right-handed person cannot be forced to become left-handed. These learning differences are also found to be a source of parental concern whether their child is left-handed or right handed. It is spread by genital contact. It is most easily spread by vaginal and anal sex, but also through oral sex and even just genital-to-genital (skin-to-skin). In 90% of people that contract HPV, their own immune system clears it up within two years, most never even developing any symptoms from it (CDC, 2009). Out of the many types of HPV types, most end up causing warts on one of the above-mentioned areas, while a certain few are known to cause cervical cancer. Lockwood-Rayermann & McIntyre (2009) state that â€Å"[t]he most common oncogenic/high-risk virus types worldwide and in the United States are Types 16, 18, 31, 45, and 52; 11% of invasive cervical cancers in the United States are caused by Types 16 and 18 (55% by Type 16 and 22% by type 18). HPV Types 31, 45, and 52 comprise another 8% of all cases.† Cervical cancer is usually not detected until it is quite advanced, which is why women should get screened for cervical cancer regularly. There is also another precaution women can take. The Food and Drug Administration approved the very first vaccine to prevent cervical cancer by the types of HPV that cause it in June of 2006 (Thomas, 2008). This vaccine, being new, and therein little is known about its long term effects, has caused ethical debates about the use of it, particularly in adolescent girls. Thomas (2008) mentions that the CDC recommended, by a unanimous vote, that girls aged 11 to 12 years old receive this new HPV vaccine. This may seem  young, but in order for the vaccine to be effective, it must be administered before a person has been exposed to HPV, which happens during sexual encounters. Since few girls are sexually active at this age, most of whom haven’t gone through puberty yet, this is an ideal age to have them be vaccinated (Thomas, 2008). Thomas (2008) also goes on to say that this vaccine has been administered to 11,000 girls around the world with no serious side effects. Their ages ranged from 9 to 26 years old. This vaccine is given by a series of three shots over the course of six months and it’s important that they get all three to be effective, since little is known about the effectiveness of people who only receive one or two (2008). But is it ethical for a girl as young as nine years old to be receiving such an invasive procedure in order to avoid a sexually transmitted disease? After all, what nine year old is even thinking about sex and STDs? That is why this issue is one that is left for the parents to decide, and opinions are unsurprisingly mixed. One of the main arguments against vaccinating young girls with the HPV vaccine is cost. Thomas (2008) lists the total cost of this vaccine, for all three shots, as around three hundred dollars, relatively inexpensive considering the detrimental consequences of contracting one of the types that are known to cause cancer. There is another issue to take into consideration, though, when accounting for the price of this vaccination; the effects for protection are only estimated to be four or five years (2008). If a young girl were to be vaccinated at nine years old, and again at ages twelve, sixteen, and twenty, you are looking at close to one thousand dollars in total. How are parents with poor health insurance coverage or none at all supposed to protect their daughters for this virus that can cause cervical cancer? A parent can also anticipate losing a day’s pay to take their child to the doctor’s office or the clinic on three different occasions to receive all three shots. Because of the cost, and the limited duration of effectiveness, a lot of women decide not to get vaccinated and not to vaccinate their daughters, hoping that a better, longer lasting, and less expensive alternative will â€Å"arrive on the pharmaceutical market† at some point in the near future (2008). Another popular argument against HPV vaccination is that some parents view it as a green light for their daughters to behave promiscuously (Thomas, 2008). Much like condom distribution at high schools, there are those that view HPV vaccination as another way to promote, and cause a rise in irresponsible sexual behavior (2008). Thomas (2008) goes on to describe a conservative political group called the Traditional Values Coalition and how they have publicly denounced the HPV vaccine and claim that genital warts, cervical cancer, etc. are not a national health concern, and â€Å"that HPV can be prevented through abstinence and marital fidelity.† This group attributes â€Å"monetary gain† by pharmaceutical companies as a motive for the mandate for HPV vaccination. Like most every ethical or moral dilemma going on in this country, this issue rests in the parents’ religious and personal beliefs. Studies have shown that despite abstinence programs, teenagers still engage in sex, proving that something as insignificant as a vaccine is not going to encourage kids to have sex—they are having it anyway. Thomas (2008) cited a study that showed that 90% of teens are using condoms when they engage in sexual intercourse, but condoms alone cannot protect you from HPV, making the vaccine all that more important for young girls to receive. If a parents cannot set aside their religious and personal beliefs long enough to acknowledge that this vaccine has the potential to save their daughter’s life, then they may require a lot more than just education. Each year 6.2 million new cases of HPV come about and currently, 20 million people in this country are infected with HPV. The vaccine that is available has the potential to save 70% of the people it would otherwise infect from cervical cancer in young women (Thomas, 2008). â€Å"In 2008, an estimated 11,070 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 3, 870 women will die from the disease† (Lockwood-Raverrmann &McIntyre, 2009). Lockwood-Raverrmann & McIntyre (2009) go on to explain that the prevalence of HPV in peaks in women in their early twenties, and also go on to say that even younger women, i.e. teenagers, are more susceptible to the virus. They describe one possible explanation for this is because in younger women, it â€Å"could be the changing histology of the cervix following the commencement of puberty.† They go to say that â€Å"during this period of time, large populations of cells are undergoing maturation and are more  suscep tible to the development of an HPV infection† (2009). With all of this statistical data, it is confusing to think that some little girl’s parent’s are prepared to deprive her of a vaccine that could potentially save her life should the opportunity arise and she chooses to have sex. Again, said girl wouldn’t even have to have vaginal intercourse to contract Type 16 HPV, which would years later cause cervical cancer in which she could quite realistically die from. Let’s look at the challenges of providing motivation, the managers at Bristol-Myers Face.   The company has several over-the-counter brands and cosmetic products and its sales throughout the World exceed $ 18 billion.   Jack Cooper is the frontline manager of the company and has adopted an effective internet strategy to market the company’s products.   He finds this strategy very difficult has it may be hard to motivate the staff members.   Internet strategy would mean implementing several projects simultaneously.   The managers have to allocate the adequate resources, set targets and control the budgets of implementation. Motivation of the staff is very difficult as the managers have to convince the staff that their internet strategy would be effective and successful.   Frequently, the staff members perceive that the internet strategy would fail.   In case of any adversity, the managers should be able to step in and create solutions so that the strategy would work.   Cooper also feels that the technical issues should be appropriately sorted out by the managers along with solving the human resources problems (especially with motivation). The behavior of the staff should be appropriately altered to enable proper development of the internet strategy.   Motivation levels of the staff members need to be high for creative and efficient outputs.   Studies have been seen that if the staff members are not properly motivated, the creative expressions and the efficiency would suffer.   Motivation should be considered as an instrument required as a resource to enable a strong digital strategy.   Five specific principles about motivation should be kept in mind.   These include:- 1.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   If a need is felt by a person, behavior would be brought about to reduce the need. 2.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The person’s feeling of the value of the outcome of conducting a particular behavior and the felt chances that the behavior would be successful, helps to bring a desire to perform a particular behavior. 3.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The value of reward for generating a particular behavior depends on certain internal and external factors that create satisfaction when the behavior is demonstrated. 4.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Only if the individual understands that the task is possible and he/she has the skills and know-how to perform a particular activity, would he/she be effective in completing the activity successfully. 5.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When the reward is received, the fairness instituted in this process, helps to generate satisfaction. Feedback is a set of responses generated by one person to another so that the quality and effectiveness of the work (or output generated) could improve in the future.   It includes corrections, approvals, additions, positive remarks, negative remarks, etc.   It may be given by the manager, but can also be given by other individuals.   The feedback provided by the manager should be highly specific and relate to the particular situation it should be utilized in.   Feedback should enable a particular behavior and not on attacking a particular individual or his/her objectives.   Feedback should be administered sincerely and honestly, so that the staff member feels that he is being helped in difficulty. The individual receiving feedback should have trust in the person giving feedback.   The individual should give permission to the manager to give the feedback.   The individual receiving the feedback should be capable of utilizing the feedback or using it for improving his/her efficiency.   Feedback also includes giving out data and observations, and not only giving advice.   The feedback should be given out only in an appropriate situation.   The person being provided the feedback should understand each and every piece of data that is being communicated.   The manager should be able to demonstrate the manner in which the work has to be done effectively whist providing feedback.   It is preferable to communicate feedback on a regular basis, rather than irregular. Non-profit Organizations in our time, has become the blood of every civil society; providing progressive benefits as well as the necessary aids for marginal groups/sectors of society. It would however be infer by the word â€Å"non-profit† that it literally mean, gaining no profit from a particular NGO. Thus, it would be a common problem for these organizations, the funds for their activities, employees’ salary, and trainings. Overview Non-profit organizations based on the research done by the Bridgespan Group (2006), faced the problem of having none if not too little resources to develop a large pool of highly competitive mangers within their organizations. Same study also indicates that over the next decade, an additional of more than double of today’s managers, will be needed by these organizations. One of the key reasons for this deficit would be the continuously increasing number of NGO’s, the retirement of leaders or the disbanding of a leader to seek greener pasture outside their non-profit organization (Bridgespan, 2006). With this in mind, there is a need to resolve this problem for leadership deficit. This paper aims to give suggestive ideas and proposals on how to address the growing need for leaders in NGO’s. Proposed Answer to the Leadership Deficit Publicity should come first. There’s a lot of ways to advertise your company. With this, you are definitely hitting two birds in one stone. First, through advertising, your endeavor and cause would be known to the public and it would be very beneficial since, major sponsors from your country or abroad would be pouring their support on your company. It would also be a good start to partner with media networks (because media has the fastest access to money). Second, is that, you would be able to attract more and more people and volunteers to work for your organization. The more volunteers you have, the lesser the budget for mobilizing labor pool. Bridgespan (2006), agree that though it may sound paradoxical, the presence of â€Å"funders† strengthen the NGO and its leadership demands through its demands that require to be met. Enhance Compensation for NGO Leaders and Executives Although some would find it their ends to reach their full potential in engaging themselves in â€Å"philanthropic† activities, it would not be denied that even these people has the economic needs, necessary for them and their families to survive. Leaders of the NGO would be much motivated if they think that their efforts and mental investments in the company are well compensated (Bridgestar, 2006). Invest within the people of your organization There is always an objective measure to quantify efficiency. Begin, by pointing out who among the junior employees in your NGO, have the capacity for hard work, mental alertness, loyalty and the necessary qualities such as greater sense of responsibility. Invest in them. Those in their senior years and are about to retire, should worked hands-on with their volunteers and juniors. Try to impart to them the knowledge that you have long held to remain the executive of your organization. Investing in these young people is cheaper and gradual than recruiting from the outside. Whenever, potential leaders are already identified, start by imparting them a higher level executive strategies through training and development. The training strategy should be feasible, cheaper and would instill the value of â€Å"continuity† among the set of leaders. Also, discuss the trend in the leadership deficit to these new potential leaders and asked their opinions and suggestions about it. Provide Intergenerational Discussion By this, it means a link between the senior (baby boomers) and the future junior leaders. A discussion on the aspirations, the rewarding milieu, hindrances to loyalty within an NGO and difficulties among these future leaders, would give an insightful bird’s-eye view on what generation gap means and how to address this hindrance. A good background on the subjects mentioned above would be the basis for creating a better framework for recruitment, training and providing increased compensation and other benefits. Senior leaders should always recognize the difference in technology they have handled before compared to these new junior potential leaders and the importance of giving the latter the right improvement for their creativity, growth and development, and fulfillment as prospective leaders of the company (NCNA, 2007). A greater Plan for the New Batches of Leaders More often than not, being a leader in an NGO neither confines anyone to the four walls of the organization, nor requires anyone to devote his/her life working for the organization. With this, it should not be overlooked, that at a more personal level, leaders tend to have their social activities outside the organization. Forming a girls club, for instance is another role a leader may play. In this manner, NGO’s should male use of this event as an advantage not otherwise. For instance, a party or a training involving their organization may farther contribute to higher employees’ satisfaction and may open venue for new prospective leaders, if not loyal employees of the organization (The Cancer Council, 2007). Given all the proposed alternatives above, NGO should reconsider the strategies that they have employed in their organizations. Above all things, for these company to realize the latter propositions, there is a must to strengthen their instability through increasing their sponsors and funds; with this all other would be a lot easier and faster. Hooker knew the damage the contamination has done and for the same reason it had protested against the excavation of Love canal. The precautions were merely to hide the gruesome effects of its activities from the masses and government. Had there been no removal of the ceramic caps and concrete walls, no one would have known the damage company had done. (Hooker Chemicals & Plastics Corp. There are great many facts that reach to the same conclusion: Hooker was the only one who was responsible for the environmental damage in Love canal and the nearby areas. It might be so that just to escape the heavy fine and charges for the violation of laws, the company did all the necessary dramatic performance to hide what they had done to the environment. The fact that public did not complaint about the health damage due to the dis astrous chemical wasting in the Love canal except some very few owes to another fact. Hooker was the major employer in the area and had some great influence. This was enough to stop them from speaking against the company. Their own jobs would have been in danger if they even thought about bringing the matter up to the Government’s consideration. Hooker Chemicals was in no way a socially responsible company, also witnessed by numerous citizens.

Discussion There are many biological and medical issues that are not being resolved satisfactorily by the present state of our medical ethics today. Besides euthanasia, other examples that legal and medical experts alike grapple with are abortion, surrogate motherhood, organ transplants, brain death and end-of-life care (palliative medicine). The basic questions facing all ethicists can be generalized into a few categories, such as: how is life to be measured and determined (that life exists), who will judge whether a person should live or die, what constitutes proof of death and when should heroic medical intervention be withheld from a patient? The ultimate question is who has the right to live and the right to die? Even dying can be considered as one of the more basic human rights – that is, the right to die with dignity intact. Euthanasia – in plain and simple language, euthanasia means mercy killing. There are many situations in which euthanasia seems to be justified, such as when a person is suffering from an incurable and terminal disease and is very likely to suffer in great pain. Literally, the meaning of euthanasia in Greek is a â€Å"good and easy death† to relieve pain and suffering. Even the British House of Lords had deemed it appropriate to give a precise definition for it – â€Å"this is a deliberate intervention to end a life with express intention to relieve intractable suffering.† While people are still healthy, it is easy to be detached about all the debates on euthanasia but a time will come when a person has to face it and its consequences. The controversy surrounding euthanasia has been made more complicated beca use of the earlier practice of eugenics which is medical science applied to improving the composition of genetics in a human population (Appel, 2004, p. 611). Eugenics fell into disrepute because it was employed by the Nazis in their desire to attain a high level of purity of the Aryan races.
